Elland Road to Stage 2005 World Club Challenge

Rugby league - 04 Nov 2004

Elland Road Stadium in Leeds will stage Rugby League’s 2005 World Club Challenge between reigning Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos and current NRL Premiers Canterbury Bulldogs.

The game will take place on Friday 4th February 2005 (ko 8.00pm).

The location has been switched from the Leeds club’s usual home Headingley Stadium in order to accommodate the anticipated massive demand from Rhinos and Rugby League supporters throughout the UK.

Commenting on the announcement of the fixture, the Rugby Football League’s Executive Chairman Richard Lewis said: 'The 2005 World Club Challenge is set to be a tremendous contest between clubs who are champions of the strongest two domestic Rugby League competitions in the northern and southern hemisphere.

'The game will also feature some of the world’s best players going head to head. Many of them are currently competing in the Gillette Tri-Nations and we have seen in previous World Club Challenges that this type of international event motivates them to perform at the highest levels.

'The Rhinos will carry the hopes of Rugby League fans in the UK and the Bulldogs will be seeking to enhance their reputation as one of Australia’s most successful clubs'.

Lewis added: 'We feel that Elland Road will provide the perfect venue for the fixture. It has the capacity to accommodate the many thousands of Rhinos fans who will undoubtedly want to support their team as well as the massive corporate interest that the game is set to generate. We are already looking forward to staging the fixture which will be a tremendous start to the Super League year'.

Also commenting on the game, the Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Gary Hetherington added: 'We are very pleased with the choice of Elland Road for such an historic event for the Rhinos and the City.

'Hopefully, Rugby League fans throughout the region will be there to create a special atmosphere.'
