Elite League Gains Affiliation with Ice Hockey UK
The Elite League is pleased to announce that affiliation to Ice Hockey UK has finally been agreed. The International Ice Hockey Federation have played a positive role in helping formulate the arrangement with IHUK.
As an affiliated member of IHUK, the Elite League looks forward to playing its role in helping promote and develop the long-term plans for the sport in the UK.
Speaking today, Elite League chairman Eamon Convery reported, 'We are pleased to have successfully concluded discussions about affiliation. This will now enable us to hopefully build strong relationships with EPL and BNL clubs. From the outset we made public commitments in terms of developing 'farm team' arrangements with junior clubs, being affiliated now enables us to explore this potential for promoting junior players into the professional ranks'.
Elite League club fans have been very supportive and patient over the past months and it is expected that season ticket sales will continue to be snapped up as the first games approach. In advance of the full season exciting challenge matches have been arranged with AIK Stockholm (Sweden), SC Bietigheim-Bissingen Steelers (Germany), an English Premier League Select team and some mouth-watering local derby games.
Fans can now really look forward to the first season of ice hockey for the Elite League, which promises a very full and exciting year of hockey from the elite clubs in the UK.
The opening game of the inaugural Elite Ice Hockey League takes place on Friday 12th September 2003 when London Racers entertain Sheffield Steelers in the Alexandra Palace - Face Off time for the curtain-raiser fixture is 8.30pm.
