Curling: Danish 2011 Women's Worlds Hosts Study Champéry European Event

Curling - 13 Dec 2010

ESBJERG, DENMARK - Europe’s top curlers have just met in Champéry, Switzerland to compete for medals at the European Curling Championships. In March 2011, the world’s top female curlers will gather in Denmark for the Capital One World Women’s Curling Championship. The Danish hosts visited Champéry to learn from the Swiss hosts and take the best ideas to the Danish host city in 2011, Esbjerg.

Tove Porskjær, President of the Local Organising Committee in Esbjerg and Danish Curling Association board member said:”The objective of the Capital One World Women’s Curling Championship organising committee is to deliver a unique and unforgettable event for all the curlers and spectators. We hope that each and everyone related to the event will return to their home country with an image of Denmark as a destination for curling, staged and exhibited in a different but very exciting way”.

The Capital One World Women’s Curling Championship takes place from 18-27 March 2011. The event will be officially opened on the 18th by the heir to the Danish throne, Crown Prince Frederik and the first games of the event will be held on Friday evening.

“It will be a big moment for Danish curling,” Tove Porskjær added. “We are really looking forward to welcoming all international top-class curlers to Esbjerg in 2011 and to enable our Danish elite curlers to compete for World Championship medals on home ground. We believe that such an event can contribute to developing the sport of curling in Denmark. In addition, the City of Esbjerg has a lot to offer visitors: perfect facilities both regarding curling and accommodation but also the North Sea, which is quite unique for Denmark and attracts lots of international tourists every year.”

Sport Event Denmark, the national sports event organisation, is - along with the City of Esbjerg – the Danish Curling Association’s partner in terms of funding and organising the event. CEO Lars Lundov said: “the 2011 World Curling Championship for women is an important event in the Olympic sport calendar. In addition it will give Danes the chance to support Denmark’s top curlers on home ground. All partners are 100% dedicated to this event. 2011 will be a great sports event year in Denmark, as we are also staging the UCI Road World Championships and the UEFA Under-21 Championships. We are looking forward to continuing our efforts to support the organisers and believe that the 2011 World Curling Championship for women will be a memorable experience for both curler and spectators”.
