Couchman Harrington Sport Ventures Unit Motors On

27 Jan 2006

Leading sports business law firm, Couchman Harrington Associates, continues to build on the 2005 successes of its Sports Ventures Unit by completing its first major corporate transaction of 2006.  The Unit acted for the Healey family, the owners of Healey Automobile Consultants Limited ("HAC") and the classic "Healey" sports car marque, on the sale earlier this week of HAC to an Anglo American consortium, HFI Automotive.  Healey vehicles have long been part of British sports car heritage, have been driven competitively by drivers such as Sir Stirling Moss, and have held national and international speed records.  The transaction builds on the firm's work for HAC on intellectual property matters and the protection of the Healey mark, which in turn protected the enterprise value of HAC.

Couchman Harrington's senior partner, Nic Couchman, said: "I have had the pleasure of representing the owners of the Healey marque for a number of years, primarily in fighting trade mark piracy to protect the value of the marque and the business created by the present owners' forebears. It is very satisfying to see that work pay off for the Healey family, not only in terms of securing a sale that will deliver value to them, but also because it has enabled them to choose the right commercial partner with whom to work to produce new cars worthy of the family name.  I am looking forward to seeing the brand new Healey sports car roll off the production line soon, particularly as it will be built in Britain.”

HAC Director, Cecilia Healey said: "Nic Couchman and his Couchman Harrington team have been steadfast in their support of our company through some trying times.  We particularly appreciate Nic’s positive and imaginative approach to problem solving.  His clarity of thinking has enabled us to understand difficult technical legal situations and make informed decisions which have resulted in many successful solutions. Without Couchman Harrington’s support, it is doubtful whether we would have been able to reach the point where a sale such as this was possible.  Their guidance and management of the sale process has also allowed the family and HFI to begin our new relationship with a single focus on producing great new Healey sports cars in Britain again".
