IOC President Thomas Bach welcomed at FISU headquarters in Lausanne

University sports - 21 Feb 2020

President Bach made his first visit to FISU’s offices on the University of Lausanne campus today, as FISU leaders gathered for three days of Steering Committee and Executive Committee meetings.

LAUSANNE – The IOC President Thomas Bach visited the headquarters of the International

University Sports Federation (FISU) on Thursday, even as FISU’s global leadership congregated in the Olympic Capital for the biannual Executive Committee meeting.

During his visit, Bach met with FISU leaders and staff, saying: “It’s always a pleasure to be among passionate leaders and young people committed to developing sport’s role in society. FISU has clearly found the right place to call home, among the university students it serves here in the Olympic Capital.”

The IOC President was accompanied by IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell and Marina Baramia of the IOC President’s office.

FISU President Oleg Matytsin and Secretary General Eric Saintrond welcomed President Bach and his team to the office, and following the visit, President Matytsin said: “The IOC’s continued support of FISU has been of vital importance to the development of our university sports movement. We are particularly grateful for President Bach’s leadership in that support. Having a former Universiade competitor as the leader of the Olympic Movement is a perfect example of how future leaders can be shaped by their positive experiences of international university sport.”

Upcoming hosts of the World University Games are also present in Lausanne, as they participate in FISU workshops aimed towards further increasing the success of their marketing and communications efforts leading up to the editions in 2021 and 2023.
