BOA Launches Anti Doping Commission

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced the formation of a major enquiry into Anti Doping in Sport with a broad mandate to a newly-formed Commission to make recommendations to improve and strengthen British anti-doping controls before the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Commission will take evidence and report to the BOA Executive who, engaging with UK Sport, the National Anti-Doping Organisation will consider how best to ensure that the UK leads the world in the global fight against doping in sport. Their Report will be made public and is expected to be published prior to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

Chaired by Colin Moynihan, Chairman of the BOA, the Commission will include:

Dr. Richard Budgett - BOA Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Steph Cook MBE - Olympic Champion in modern pentathlon at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She went on to become individual European and World Champion in 2001. Now a full time doctor.

Brian Cookson - President of the British Cycling Federation; Member, BOA Executive Board.

Sir Craig Reedie - IOC Member; World Anti-Doping Association Member and former Chairman of the BOA

Dr. Michael Turner – Chief Medical Advisor to the Lawn Tennis Association and the Jockey Club. Former Director of Medical Services at the BOA.

Charles Flint QC - is an advocate with a wide experience in general commercial law having practised in all divisions of the High Court. He is a leading QC in Financial Services, commercial litigation, civil fraud, administrative & public law, and sports law.

A Senior Adviser has also been appointed to support the work of the Commission:

Professor Arne Ljungqvist – IOC Member; Chairman of the IOC Medical Commission; WADA Board Member; Lord-in-Waiting to the King of Sweden.

Commenting on the launch of the Commission Colin Moynihan, Chairman of the BOA, stated:

“This is one of the highest powered Commissions ever established in the UK. The BOA as the nation’s National Olympic Committee has obligations to each of WADA, the IOC and our constituent National Governing Bodies in this area. As the host Olympic nation in 2012 collectively we, the Government and its agencies have a duty to be a world leading country in the fight against doping. Our work will seek to address the agenda to ensure this happens.”
