Olympics - 23 Jul 2021
Indonesia has moved on to target hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, after the 2032 event was, as expected, awarded to Brisbane this week.
The Australian city had been given preferred host status by the International Olympic Committee and was duly confirmed as host on Wednesday.
Raja Sapta Oktohari, the president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, has said that his organisation is targeting securing that same status for the 2036 games, and seeking exclusive talks with the IOC along those lines.
He said: “The Olympics future host commission only allows one candidate to hold targeted dialogue, and they chose Brisbane…
“We will not back down and will continue to fight for the 2036 Olympics… We aim to be the only country chosen for targeted dialogue for that event."
In 2019, the IOC substantially altered its rules for the host city bidding process, to reduce bid costs and streamline the system.
Unlike the previous system, prospective host cities do not campaign - instead, they are evaluated by a host commission (one each for the summer and winter editions of the games), which then starts extended talks with a smaller number of cities, named ‘preferred hosts’.
The Queensland bid, confirmed late in 2019, was the most advanced in terms of discussions with the IOC, with Australian prime minister Scott Morrison having met with IOC president Thomas Bach late last year to discuss the bid.
Other countries that expressed an interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics included Hungary, India, China, Germany, Qatar, and a joint proposal from North and South Korea.
India has been reported as also ready, like Indonesia, to roll over its bid for the 2036 event, with the city of Ahmedebad considered a potential hub, and central government employing consultants to assess how to lay out a detailed bid.
The IOC has previously said “continuous dialogue is ongoing with other interested parties, in order to further develop their excellent and promising projects for the future".
After the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, starting today, the next two editions will be in Paris in 2024 and in Los Angeles in 2028.
Oktohari said: “We will work harder and do everything we can with patience to achieve our dream of hosting the Olympics. We will not go down.”
Indonesia campaigned to host the 2032 Olympics after previously staging the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
