Snapchat extends with NFL and partners with NBC for Premier League
Snapchat, the instant photo and video messaging app, has signed a new two-year deal with American football's NFL, and announced a partnership with the NBC Sports Group based on its coverage of English soccer's Premier League.
As part of the NFL contract, the league will produce a 'best of' Snapchat story that will offer fans regularly updated highlights and breaking news every Sunday. This will be in addition to the daily (in-season) and weekly (off-season) stories already published on the app, which Snapchat then helps to distribute to its more than 190 million daily active users.
The new Sunday posts will be updated every hour with highlights and news that are packaged specifically for Snapchat. NFL content will be available on Snap’s 'discover' page and past editions of the stories will be available through the app’s search feature.
Blake Stuchin, NFL vice-president of digital media business development, said: “Millions of fans engage with the NFL every day on Snapchat. The Sunday Publisher Story will be another great addition to our presence on the platform.”
In the 2017-18 season, 52 million unique viewers globally watched NFL content on Snapchat, the NFL said.
Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group, has partnered with Snapchat on a new weekly original show called 'Premier League: Extra Time'.
Each Monday throughout the Premier League season, the show will offer US users a recap of the weekend’s top action and storylines.
A preview of the show will air on Snapchat on 9 August, on the eve of the season-opener between Manchester United and Leicester City, with the first episode airing on 13 August, and further programmes to follow every Monday throughout the season.
Troy Ewanchyna, vice-president, digital and NBCSports.com, said: “Premier League fans are among the most passionate and digitally sophisticated out there, and we strive to bring the best content on every platform. We’re thrilled to further our commitment by bringing this fun, energised concept to life with exceptional partners in Snap and the Premier League.”
NBC holds exclusive Premier League rights in USA a six-year deal running to 2021-22, with the broadcaster able to show all 380 matches each season across its various channels and platforms.
