Further to this morning's announcement by attheraces confirming the termination of its Media Rights Agreement with 49 UK racecourses, Channel 4 remains in negotiations with the racecourses for the terrestrial broadcast rights. These negotiations are progressing and Channel 4 hopes to be in a position to update the market over the next few days.

Last year’s Martell Grand National was one of the most gripping broadcasts of 2002 according to research conducted by Sponsorship Intelligence. Viewers of the live race broadcast on BBC1 produced a loyalty rate of 87% for the 15 minute race slot – i.e. each viewer watched on average 13 minutes of this slot. This level of viewer loyalty is unsurpassed by most sports broadcasts and is traditionally the domain of non-sporting programmes, such as Coronation Street and key news broadcasts.
