Taipei, 30 August 2017 – At the end of an exceptional Closing Ceremony in Taipei Stadium, the 29th Summer Universiade drew to a successful close earlier this evening. The ceremony marked the end of an outstanding 12 days of sport, education and culture. 7,734 athletes from 134 countries competed in 271 medal events across 21 different sports.

The road to the Olympic Games seems to go – more and more – through The World Games.  Former World Games sport Rugby made it to the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 and Karate, Sport Climbing, Surfing and Baseball/Softball will be present in Tokyo 2020. Earlier, The World Games sports Badminton, Triathlon and Taekwondo became Olympic sports in 2000 and Beach Volleyball in 1996. Dance Sport will be on the programme of the Youth Olympics 2018 as well as Karate and Sport Climbing.

On Thursday 20 July IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach declared the 10th edition of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland open.  He delivered the keynote address between the welcome speeches of Jose Perurena, President of the International World Games and Rafał Dutkiewicz, Mayor of the city of Wroclaw.

Athletes from 111 countries will compete at The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland this summer. This is 8 countries more than in 2013 in Cali, Colombia, and the most countries ever at The World Games. In 2009 in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, the participants came from 84 countries, which was a new record at that time. In 2013 the number grew to 103.

In exactly 100 days, some 4,000 young artists and athletes from the 84 member States and governments of La Francophonie will come together in Abidjan to participate in the 8th Francophone Games that will take place from 21 to 30 July 2017 in Ivory Coast. This year’s edition is focused on Solidarity, Diversity and Excellence. It is also meant to support the development of Ivory Coast and strengthen the national cohesion of the country.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed on a new Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday. IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach and President José Perurena of the IWGA signed this important agreement about mutual support during the SportAccord Convention in Lausanne. This document supersedes the previous Memorandum of Understanding dated 27 October 2000.

The International World Games Association announced the daily schedule of the sports program for the 10th edition of these games in Wroclaw/Poland 2017. After the Opening Ceremony on 3 August, the spectators can experience six sports on the first of the ten competition days (4 August).
