Sportcal Magazine - Issue 24

Published by : Sportcal

The latest, Olympic-themed, edition of Sportcal Magazine, is now available.

This issue leads with the first-ever winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, a fascinating trial of IOC president Jacques Rogge’s vision for an event which will re-engage young people worldwide in the benefits of sport and the Olympic ideals.

In the TV & Digital feature, Sportcal talks to Eurosport’s Julien Bergeaud about the pan-European broadcaster’s plans for 2012, including its coverage of three ‘blockbuster’ events this year: the Africa Cup of Nations; soccer’s Euro 2012 European Championships; and the Olympic Games in London.

The Sponsorship feature is a study of the British Olympic Association’s plans for engaging with sponsors of the London Olympics, and attracting partners for the next four-year cycle.

The Federations feature examines the World Squash Federation’s bid for the sport to gain a place on the programme for the 2020 Olympic Games, and hears WSF president N Ramachandran claim that the sport has addressed the two flaws that prevented it from being chosen for the games of 2012 and 2016.

The Sports City for this edition is Baku, a bidder to host the 2020 Olympics, after emerging from relative sporting obscurity to host 2011’s World Boxing Championships and 2010 European Wrestling Championships.  We hear more about the Azeri city’s sporting ambitions.

In the Sports Market Interview, Chris Overholt, the Canadian Olympic Committee’s new chief executive, says that one of the biggest benefits of hosting an Olympic Games for a national Olympic committee is the opportunity that it provides to strengthen commercial relationships.

These features combine with our usual tables of hard-to-find data and News in Brief to provide a complete round-up of all the crucial activities in the international sports industry.
