A Snapshot of Support for Baku 2020

Baku, 2 May 2012 – Young people in Azerbaijan have turned their camera lenses on Baku in support of the city’s 2020 Bid.

In a competition entitled My Home Azerbaijan: Baku 2020 young Azerbaijanis were invited to submit photographs depicting what they loved most about their country and why they supported the 2020 Bid.

Many of the submitted photos were of young athletes, reflecting young Azerbaijanis’ passion for sports of all kind. Other entries paid tribute to the country’s stunning and unspoiled scenery and wildlife, or pictorial examples of the warm welcome given to all visitors.

But the predominant images captured through the youngsters’ lenses were of the rapid physical transformation taking place in Baku, with beautiful and spectacular new buildings rising over the rooftops around the UNESCO World Heritage Old City.

Baku Bid CEO, Konul Nurullayeva was on hand at an exhibition of the best entries, as well as handing out prizes to the winning photographers at a ceremony in the Old City’s Art Gardens.

Nurullayeva told the assembled delegates: “I am so touched by the levels of support for our Bid from everyone in Azerbaijan, both young and old. People here believe that our Olympic Bid is part of a wider process of transforming Baku into a world-class destination. It is also easy to see from the photos that Azerbaijan is a country of infinite natural beauty. And the pride that these youngsters feel for their country is amazing.

She continued: “Our vision to host the 2020 Games is clear: we want to prove that an Olympic Games is not only a sound investment in a nation’s sport, health and quality of life, but that it can be hosted in a prudent and responsible manner which, in turn, provides a sustainable Games hosting model for the future.

“We will show potential Host Cities that not only are the Games achievable in young emerging countries, but they are also responsible, prudent fiscal and social investments for the future in any country. Baku 2020's legacy for the Olympic Movement will build on London 2012's example; meaning, optimising the Games as a means to build a better society, and promoting interest and participation in sport.”
