ISSF General Assembly Assigns 2018 WCH to the City of Changwon (KOR)
London, 17/04/2012 - The ISSF General Assembly held in London today awarded the 2018 ISSF World Championship in all events to the city of Changwon, Korea, by unanimous decision. Over 30 million US dollars where granted by the Korean Government to rebuild the existing venues and to organize the massive event.

Korea’s 1992 Rifle Olympic Champion Lee Eun Chul presented Changwon’s application with an impressive set of facts during the Assembly: over 40 billion of Korean Won are budgeted for the event, in order to refit the existing shooting venue of Changwon and to welcome thousand of athletes. The new compound will feature six shotgun layouts, one-hundred 50meter targets and one-hundred 10meter targets, fourteen 25meter layouts as well as several Running Target layouts.

The ISSF World Championship in all events takes place every four years, and it’s the ISSF’s largest shooting competition. The last edition was held in Munich in 2010, turning out to be the first qualifying event for the 2012 London Games among all the sports, with over 2300 participants and about 4000 starts. The next Championship will be held in Granada, Spain, in 2014. Changwon will then follow in 2018. More than 50 shooting events, including Olympic and non-Olympic competitions in the disciplines of Shotgun, Rifle, Pistol and Running Target will be conducted there.

“We are committed to deliver an excellent competition. Changwon is a sport-loving city with a long tradition in shooting events”, Olympic Champ Lee Eun Chul said.

The lord mayor of Changwon, Mr. Park Wan Sou, said: “We are very thankful to the ISSF. We have been working hard, and we will do our best to deliver a great competition!”

The ISSF President, Mr. Olegario Vazquez Raña said: “It’s a big surprise, and I think this is very good for the shooting sport. Our sport is united: this is the best decision for our World Championship.”

The ISSF Secretary General, Mr. Franz Schreiber, said: “We congratulate our Korean friends, they have been hosting five ISSF World Cups in these years, and they are experienced championship organizers.”

The ISSF General Assembly also voted for the 2015 ISSF Shotgun World Championship, which will be held at the 12-layouts “Trap Conca Verde” Shooting Club in Lonato, Italy that won the votes of the delegates against Maribor and Belgrade bids.

Following the General Assembly, the focus moves now on the “London Prepares” ISSF World Cup in all events taking place at the RAB Olympic Venue in London. Fifteen events, in the disciplines of Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun shooting, are conducted there from the 17th to the 29th of April. The first medal match – the 10m Air Rifle Women Final – is scheduled to take place on April the 19th. ***
