Copenhagen is a Leading International Sports City
The Danish capital is among the best cities in the world at hosting major sporting events, according to a new international ranking list. This latest praise will be used to help Copenhagen become host for among other the IIHF World Championship in 2017. This ice hockey world championship would add another great event to the impressing list of sports events in Denmark.

Copenhagen is in good company with cities such as New York, Tokyo and Sydney also on the list - some of the world's best cities when it comes to hosting international sporting events. Behind the new ranking list is the respected British sporting media company, Sports Business Group, which is mostly concerned with the business aspects of sport. Inclusion on the list is the result of many years' work for Wonderful Copenhagen (The tourist organization for Greater Copenhagen) and Sport Event Denmark which host major international sports events, together with various national sports federations and relevant municipal councils.

"This is a result of the major sports events held in Copenhagen from 2009 until the present day. During that period we have been hosts for the 121st IOC Session and XIII Olympic Congress in 2009, and last year for the World BMX Championships and The UCI Road World Championships. This has really established Copenhagen as a leading city for sports events, for which we are now getting international recognition," says Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, managing director of Wonderful Copenhagen.

On course for the Ice Hockey World Championship
The work to win a major sporting event to the city begins many years before the event will take place. Copenhagen's entry on Sports Business Group's list will be used as yet another sales argument for winning more large international sports events to the capital and Denmark in the future.

"We will actively use this increased focus on Copenhagen as a host city for sports events in, among other things, our work to bring the 2017 IIHF World Championship to Denmark,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.

More World Championships over the next three years
The ranking list of the world's best sports cities features 25 destinations spread around the globe - from London and Paris, to Singapore, Rio and Buenos Aires.
The list, which is published every second year, is drawn up by Business Sport Group's expert panel who make their assessment based on knowledge of both the various sporting events and the individual cities.
The major, international events which Wonderful Copenhagen and Sport Event Denmark together with national sports federations and the municipal councils involved - have already won for the city in the coming years include: The European Men's Volleyball Championships 2013, BWF World Badminton Championships 2014, the IAAF 1/2 marathon World Championship 2014 and the World Archery Championships 2015.
