Milan, July 30th 2010 – Giro d’Italia, Committee of “Italia 150” and the Milan Municipality are partner in the 94th edition of the Corsa Rosa that will be dedicated to the 150th anniversary of national unity.
The start of the 94th Giro d’Italia will be given on May 7th 2010 from Venaria Reale (Turin) and the last stage will finish in front of the Milan Dome.
The entire Giro will be an opportunity to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unity of the Italy and the importance of the Italian main bycicle race for the city of Milan.
The first stage of the race will be on Saturday May 7th 2011 from Venaria Reale to Piazzetta Reale in Turin city center and and it will be a Team time trial that measures 22 kilometers.
The partnership between RCS Sport/La Gazzetta dello Sport and Committee of Italia 150 was presented yesterday morning at the Hall of Diana of the Venaria Reale in Venaria, close to Turin.
The Corsa Rosa returns so after two years to pay homage to the city that once was the location of departure or arrival time of 84 stages of the Giro d’Italia.
The first departure from Turin was at the Unity Centenary, May 20th 1961, when the Giro started from Turin and ends in Milan on June 11th. The stage victory and the Maglia Rosa went to the Spaniard Miguel Poblet and that Giro saw the final victory of the Italian Arnaldo Pambianco.
However, since the first edition in 1909, Turin was one of the most "visited" city by the Giro. That year, the Piedmont city hosted the start of the 7th stage: Genoa - Turin (won by Luigi Ganna) and start the 8th and final stage, Turin-Milan, who decided the final win of Dario Beni.
In 1982, however, Turin was the seat of arrival of the 65th Giro d’Italia. The last stage, individual time trial Pinerolo-Turin, confirmed the triumph of the French Bernard Hinault.
In the recent past, the city has hosted the finish of the individual time trial Chieri-Turin (18th stage of the Giro 2005) partial victory of Ivan Basso and when starting the 11th stage of the Giro 2009 Turin Arenzano, which saw the victory of the British sprinter, Marc Cavendish.

The partnership is made by the Committee with the of Giro d’Italia and the Commitee Italia 150. The start of the Tour is supported also by the Piedmont Region, in collaboration with the Municipality of Turin and the City of Venaria, and the patronage of the Province of Turin.
Coming to the last stage of the 94th Giro d’Italia, it will be a spectacular individual time trial into the centre of Milan. Sunday May 29th, all the “survived” riders will ride one by one into the landmarks of the city, from Piazza Castello to the heart of the city, in Piazza Duomo.
The return of the Giro d’Italia in Milan was officially presented this morning at the Clock Room of Palazzo Marino, at the presence of the Mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti and the Councillor for Sport and Leisure, Alan Rizzi. Representing the organizers, the Director of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Andrea Monti.

Milan and Giro d’Italia are linked by an umbilical cord that gets the origin in 1909. On May 13th of that year, the first stage of the first Giro d’Italia (Milan - Bologna 397 km) which saw the victory and the first Maglia Rosa worn by Dario Beni. Since then the Giro ended in this city 73 times, 37 of which Milan also hosted the start. The city has been home to start or end stage of the Giro d'Italy in just 10 editions in 93 season.
Although not the Italian Capital, in the history of cycling world Milan for Giro d’Italia is the same as Paris for Tour de France and Madrid for the Vuelta of Espana: the natural conclusion.
