Tokyo, 13 July 2010 – The Japan 2022 Bid Committee has appointed Hiroaki Morishima, who played in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup™ (scoring against Tunisia in 2002), as an Official Bid Ambassador. The Committee is confident that Morishima will be a powerful new addition to the team.
Morishima has played for many years at Cerezo Osaka, one of the J.League clubs based in Osaka, one of Japan’s candidate host cities for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™. Osaka is the site of two proposed stadiums for 2022: the Nagai Stadium, part of the legacy of the 2002 tournament, and the new Osaka Ecology Stadium (provisional name), a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of over 80,000.
The Bid Ambassadors are the public faces of Japan’s bid. Their task is to promote the bid in order to win the support of FIFA, the football confederations, and the general public, both domestically and internationally. In addition to his contributions to the J.League and the national team, Morishima is also a club ambassador for Cerezo Osaka helping to popularise football as a sport. The Bid Committee is confident that Morishima fully grasps the significance of Japan’s bid and is delighted to have him on the team.
