Deutsche Telekom nets FIBA national team rights to 2021
Deutsche Telekom, the German telecoms firm, today signed a five-year contract with FIBA to show national team basketball tournaments in the country.
Deutsche Telekom will offer games on EntertainTV, its IPTV platform, online at telekomsport.de and on mobile devices via the Telekom Sport App until 2021.
The deal begins with EuroBasket 2017, which runs from 31 August to 17 September and takes place in Turkey, Finland, Israel and Romania.
All of Germany's matches in the championships will be available free of charge.
Also included in the agreement are the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and its qualifiers, and FIBA EuroBasket Cup 2021 and its qualifiers.
Deutsche Telekom also held rights to EuroBasket 2015, albeit public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF showed Germany’s matches at the tournament.
Henning Stiegenroth, head of sports marketing at Deutsche Telekom, said: "This partnership with FIBA will substantially grow the offering of top quality basketball on our Telekom Sport platform. The addition of the best national team basketball games and their year-round visibility strengthen the position of Telekom as the home of basketball for the German supporters."
The deal was brokered by FIBA Media, the joint venture set up with Perform, the international sports content and media group. FIBA and Perform signed a 17-year media rights agreement a year ago worth close to €500 million ($590 million) in guarantees and investment.
Earlier this week, FIBA Media appointed Torneos, the Argentinian sports rights agency, to sell broadcast rights in Latin America and the Caribbean to major FIBA competitions to 2025.
