SportAccord Convention to host 'LawAccord' in Lausanne focusing on the future of sport and the law
LAUSANNE, Switzerland – SportAccord Convention is delighted to host this year’s LawAccord Conference with the support of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday, 18 April 2016 at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne. This year’s LawAccord conference programme will focus on the Future of Sport and the Law, as well as take a dispassionate view of some of the disputes following a year of conflict in sport.
Conference Co-Chair and Head of the LawAccord Conference Programme, Stephen Townley commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting LawAccord 2016 with the support of the Court of Arbitration for Sport as well as being able to extend a warm welcome to the recently appointed Director General of WADA, Oliver Niggli, who will take up his post officially in the near future. This year, LawAccord will focus on the needs of lawyers, sports administrators and International Federation officials, providing insights from a range of experts across the field, on the latest developments and concepts, as well as disputes that continue to challenge the world of sport.”
The initial Keynote will be given by Olivier Niggli from WADA, an organisation who play a pivotal role in preventing cheating in sport. The Keynote will provide an update on the implementation of the 2015 Code, WADA compliance programme and a roundup of the latest WADA investigations.
The first panel session involves an interactive workshop: What does sport look for and need from the legal industry? Sharing the ‘inside track’, delegates will learn what International Federations (IFs) and multisport events are looking for with plenty of opportunity for discussion and networking. This session is targeted at Sports lawyers and professionals who provide legal services to sport, (particularly International Federations), and those who wish to break into this industry.
The following Keynote: The latest from CAS will be given by Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General of CAS, providing delegates with the most recent jurisprudence and CAS rules. This will follow with a presentation of Olympic CAS case law, as well as an interactive discussion on how the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s Ad Hoc Division at the Rio 2016 Games, plans to tackle any disputes that may arise.
Most senior International Federation officials spend a portion of their lives mediating disputes within their organisations. Session 2: Solving sport disputes through mediation, examines the increasing role of mediation in sport. This session is aimed at Sports lawyers and professionals who need to understand the role and application of mediation within the SportAccord Movement, as well as what IFs and multisport events are looking to achieve in conflict management, and how mediation can play its part. The panel will also discuss when mediation is a real alternative to resolving conflicts within and outside a Federation and whether it works, how mediation can be incorporated into agreements, and where its shortfalls lie compared with other methods of legal recourse.
