Hermann Maier is the most known athlete in winter sports in Austria and Switzerland. This is the result of a comprehensive winter sports survey conducted by IFM International among 500 respondents each in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Austrian alpine skier even outpaced the Overall World Cup champion Benjamin Raich in his home country. The market research study shows that Hermann Maier generated the highest levels of spontaneous awareness in Austria as well as in Switzerland. Outstanding 70 % of the surveyed Austrians immediately remembered their ski star. Double Olympic champion Raich ranked 2nd in the Austrian survey with 62 % followed by female alpine skier Michaela Dorfmeister who generated 51 %. The winter sports survey demonstrates the enormous social standing of the alpine skiers for the Austrian public. It is surprising that the Austrian Hermann Maier also generated the highest level of spontaneous awareness In Switzerland with 24 %. The explanation is that alpine skiing is the most popular form of winter sports in Switzerland as well and Maier is well known for his stunning exploits at various Olympics incl. the legendary fall and subsequent triumph at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. The Swiss alpine skier Bruno Kernen followed in second place in this ranking with 19 % while figure skater and Olympic silver medalist Stephane Lambiel surprised as third with 17 %. Two, old hands“ are heading the German results. Threetimes Olympic luge champion Georg Hackl came out on top of this survey with 31 % while former World Champion in ski jumping Martin Schmitt generated the second highest level of awareness although he has not been very successful in the last seasons. Kati Wilhelm - one of the dominating athletes in biathlon - placed third with only 20 %.

The 2006/2007 winter sports season will start in a few days. The male as well as the female alpine skiers will meet in Sölden from October 28th to 29th for the first giant slalom of the new season. The first cross-country competition will be held in Düsseldorf at the same weekend.
