Copenhagen bids for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships 2018
A three-day IAAF Running Festival with activities for everyone
Running for a better world Friday, 5K road race for friends and families Saturday and finally the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships for elite and recreational runners Sunday. Copenhagen wants to develop the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships from a one-day event to a three-day IAAF Running Festival with activities for everyone.
Come Join Us! Copenhagen wants to take the strong concept of the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and develop it even further in a sustainable way to create an unforgettable experience for elite, recreational runners and non-regular runners of all ages for many years going forward.
“It is of high importance to us that the event format that we create for the IAAF Running Festival in 2018 is sustainable – meaning that the IAAF Running Festival, in the years to come, can take place anywhere in the world and create a legacy not only in Denmark but also in future host cities of the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. This will build another strong event brand for the IAAF,” says CEO of the Danish Athletic Federation Jakob Larsen.
In 2014, Copenhagen took the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships to a new level. In 2018 the same team will build on this framework and create an even stronger event. In 2018, Copenhagen invites everyone to come join the running community and the IAAF family for the IAAF Running Festival.
“First, we ask people to come join us and run for a better world collecting spare running shoes for runners in developing countries, while having fun Friday night. Secondly, we ask everyone to come join us with their friends, kids, parents and grandparents for a 5K road race Saturday, illustrating that we are all runners. Finally, on the third day we ask people to come join us for the World Half Marathon Championship and run together with the elite – and with start and finish at the national stadium,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
And Lars Vallentin, head of Sport Events, Wonderful Copenhagen adds: “Copenhagen has proven its worth as an epic sporting event venue for many different sports over the years and as one of the fastest half marathon courses in the world. We are thus extremely proud of presenting our capital as a unique world class course for the IAAF World Half Marathon 2018.”
The awarding of the event will take place on Nov 27 2015 by IAAF Council.
