Cities from three continents interested in hosting 2025 World Games, says IWGA

The International World Games Association has already received inquiries from cities interested in hosting the 2025 edition of the World Games, with cities from Europe, Asia and South America all having registered early interest, according to Joachim Gossow, the association’s chief executive.
Speaking exclusively to Sportcal at the IWGA’s newly-relocated headquarters in Lausanne, Gossow said that representatives of the interested cities would be invited to attend this summer’s edition of the quadrennial games for non-Olympic sports in Wroclaw, Poland on 20 to 30 July.
Birmingham in Alabama, USA has already been chosen to host the 2021 edition.
World Games host cities are chosen by the IWGA’s general assembly, acting on a recommendation of its seven-member executive board. Gossow said: “The [bid] process starts the year after each games and it takes one year for the bid process to analyse and then decide [on a host]. That means the host is known at least six years in advance, which opens up the opportunity to bring representatives [of the next host city] into the current preparation process.”
The IWGA seeks “cities that don’t need to build infrastructure” to host the games, ideally either in the form of capital cities that are not large enough to mount a bid to host the Olympics (London is the only capital city that has hosted both the Olympics and the World Games) or other large cities that are unlikely to be awarded the Olympics because they are not capitals.
The number of athletes and support staff competing at the World Games is capped at 5,000, while hosting the games typically costs about $50 million, according to Gossow.
On Tuesday, the IWGA moved its Lausanne headquarters from the Maison International du Sport to the building that formerly housed the headquarters of the FIG, the international gymnastics federation (pictured). The IWGA’s new address is: Avenue de la Gare 12, 1003 Lausanne, Switzerland.
