How do we measure the impact of sport?

The hosting of major sports events has become a huge global industry, with billions of dollars spent every year in organising major events around the world. These events also generate billions of dollars in economic impact, construction, tourism, ticketing, merchandising, television rights and sponsorship revenue.

But just how big is the impact that these major events deliver and how do we measure and compare these impacts?

The Global Sports Impact Project (GSI)

The primary objective of the Global Sports Impact Project (GSI) is to create an internationally accepted methodology for measuring the impact of sports events thus enabling events to be compared across a standard set of indicators.

The GSI project will study a wide range of events including all major world and continental championships, multi-sport events and annual series events.

The GSI project has been developed through a process of consultation with a diverse group of sports industry experts who have provided their views and opinions on how to develop such a methodology.

GSI Online Service

The GSI Online service will provide the most comprehensive and in-depth guide to major world and continental events globally.

The service will provide in-depth analysis on each event and look at different levels of impact from a wide variety of indicators including economic, financial, sport, media, social and environmental.

The analytical tools will allow the data to be studied in a variety of different ways and will provide personalised matching tools enabling events to be selected based on personal criteria.
